Elevated BPA Levels Linked to Canned Soup Consumption

A recent study revealed elevated levels of Bisphenol A in people who consumed canned soup every day for five days, researchers said.

The study, conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health, was published on Tuesday in the online Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers found that test subjects who consumed 12 ounces of canned soup for five days in a row had urinary BPA levels 1,000 percent higher than test subjects who consumed freshly prepared soup over the same period.

BPA, which is used to in the lining of a variety of canned foods, is an endocrine-disrupting chemical which may interfere with reproductive development in animals and cause cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity in humans.
